Description
Sika deer hair is a great alternative for all sorts of tying applications. With it’s long, stiff, yet soft and narrow fibers, it is almost like a fine moose hair. The natural colour is closer to moose than that of the lighter grey of many other deer species. Because of this, it works great for tails on dry flies and nymphs. It also present well for long flat-wings on salmon-flies and big dry fly patterns. We use this for the over-wing on our Tabanas pattern and love the look and shape it offers.
The sika deer is one of the few deer species that does not lose its spots upon reaching maturity. However, spot patterns vary with region. The hair that we source for fly tying purposes show very little sign of spotting on the patches, and actually has very fine light tips beyond the dark length of the fibers. This sets it apart from most other deer hairs that have a long grey fiber, with a distinct dark band and full light tip. But best of all, it is a hair that doesn’t flare too much, being rather fine and not exhibiting large amounts of hollow in the length. This makes it ideal for applications where you want hair to lay flat and not prop up away from the hook shank.
Our Sika Deer Hair is sourced within Australia and is expertly tanned on the hide before being cut to 3″ x 3″ patches. Curretnly natural patches are in stock when available from our supplier.
