Well, for those of you who have been paying attention, you’ll already know that the Tyer’s Mate Nymph-It range of body threads from Upavon Flyfishing has recently landed, and it’s making quite an impression with local fly tyers already. This spooled thread is a woven mix of flat and sparkling materials that combine to offer an eye-catching finish on even your smallest of flies. Being on the spool, and with a great breaking strain, you can confidently use a bobbin holder for wrapping Nymph-It to ensure you get a clean, even application. This makes it very easy, and very quick to work with, and the results are fantastic.
Now, most people will be thinking of Perdigon bosies when they first see this product. And yes, that is one of the best applications for it, with the material coming to life under a coat of UV Resin. So, with that in mind, it just made sense to get Nymph-It onto the bodies of a bunch of Buzzer patterns as well. With just a thin coat of Loon UV Thin, the thread comes to life, drawing colour from the base layer thread, and reflecting light from the surrounds too. The results speak for themselves, and with so many Buzzer and Midge patterns being of smaller sizes, the easy application of this fine thread makes it a logical choice for these flies.
Nymph-It lays flat, with very little bulk, so it makes achieving a slim tapered Chironomid body a breeze. When you’re tying a Perdigon, you can go to town and wrap a whole heap off the bobbin in no time to build up bulk, or you can create the taper first with your tying thread or floss, and use Nymph-It as a top coat. That said, when it is kept close to the shank in a thin body and the bulk is made up with UV Resin, you get even more light refraction in there.
It’s available in two distinct ranges, with the Copper tones and the UV infused tones, with twelve colours in total. Whether you’re tying Perdigons, Buzzers, Midges, or simply ribbing Nymphs and Dries, this stuff give a great sparkle, a streak of colour and no unsightly bulk.
